We Are Here: ACFBI Launches Its First Campus Food Bank at FUNAAB

On the 15th of September 2026, the African Campus Food Bank Initiatives officially commenced its inaugural programme at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta — the same institution where our founder once walked hungry to class.

There is something deeply personal about coming back.

When I walked through the gates of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) on the morning of 15 September 2026, I was not simply arriving at a programme launch. I was returning to a campus that shaped me — and one that, for too many students, still presents the quiet, invisible burden of not having enough to eat.

I graduated from FUNAAB with First Class Honours in Food Science and Technology. What my transcript did not show — what no transcript does — is that several of the brightest students in my cohort were skipping meals. Not because they were fasting. Because they could not afford to eat. They sat in lectures, took notes, and quietly starved. They were too ashamed to say it aloud.

That silence is what built ACFBI.

The First Day

On 15 September 2026, under the canopy of FUNAAB's Faculty of Agriculture, the African Campus Food Bank Initiatives distributed its first food packages to students. Forty-seven students received their inaugural semester food packs — dry goods, proteins, and staples carefully selected to carry them through the weeks ahead.

The process was private, dignified, and unhurried. No announcements over a loudspeaker. No long queues in the open. Students arrived at a discreet collection point, presented their application reference, and left with a bag that represented something much larger than food: the message that they are seen, that they matter, and that their education should not be a casualty of hunger.

There were no cameras inside the distribution point. That was intentional. Dignity was the protocol.

Why FUNAAB First

The choice of FUNAAB as our inaugural campus was not incidental. It is where this story began for me personally. It is also where Dr. Azeez Yusuf, our Director of Operations — himself a distinguished lecturer in the Department of Animal Production and Health at FUNAAB — has spent years watching students struggle. When we spoke about launching the programme, his answer was immediate: *"This campus has been waiting for this."*

FUNAAB's agricultural setting also carries a particular irony worth naming: here, in an institution dedicated to the study of food systems, students go hungry. That contradiction is not lost on us. It is part of what makes this campus the right place to begin.

How It Works

The Semester Food Aid programme operates through a confidential digital application process. Students apply through the ACFBI platform, their need is assessed by our campus coordinator, and approved students are notified of their collection schedule. Every step is private. Every interaction is respectful.

On distribution days, trained student volunteers — themselves FUNAAB students — manage the logistics. They pack the bags, maintain the records, and provide the human face of the programme. They are not performing charity. They are building community.

In addition to the semester packs, ACFBI's Emergency Food Drive is available to any student facing a sudden crisis — a lost scholarship, a family emergency, a week with nothing. Response time: 24 to 48 hours. No bureaucracy. No shame.

What Comes Next

The FUNAAB launch is the beginning, not the summit. The African Campus Food Bank Initiatives is structured to expand — campus by campus, city by city — across the continent. Every university we enter is chosen because someone on the ground knows its hunger personally.

To the students who collected their first packs on 15 September 2026: you did not ask for sympathy. You asked for a fair chance. We hope we have done something worthy of that.

To everyone who donated, volunteered, or believed in this before it existed: FUNAAB happened because of you.

Feeding Students. Fueling Futures.
